Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery
Professor Andrew Gilmore is a master Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgeon. He has been performing this wonderful minimally invasive technique for 25 years. In that time he has performed over 2500 laparoscopic bowel surgeries. In addition he is the first Australian surgeon to develop the Natural orifice specimen extraction technique which avoids large extraction wounds. Laparoscopic surgery is more efficient than robotic surgery and uses small and fewer port sites. He has experience performing robotic surgery but found it adds little to his highly developed laparoscopic skill set. The evidence supporting robotic surgery is not strong; rather the robot is a surgical instrument that allows a surgeon to avoid some of the work required for true laparoscopic mastery.
