Natural Orifice Specimen Extraction: NOSE

Laparoscopic (Keyhole) surgery is a wonderful technique for offering most types of colectomy.  However there always has to be one larger cut to remove (extract) the specimen and, particularly in overweight people,  this incision can be large.  This extraction incision has the risk of wound infection and incisional hernias.

With NOSE (using extraction via the anus or vagina)   this large extraction wound, with its risks of pain, infection, hernia and scarring is close to non-existent.

Prof Andrew Gilmore is the Australian pioneering surgeon for the NOSE technique having performed his first cases in 2011. He as now performed 300 of these operations and has published widely on his results. He offers the technique too almost all patients requiring colectomy for benign conditions and some malignancies.
