About Andrew Gilmore.
Andrew Gilmore grew up the youngest of five children, a son of a preacher man! After schooling in Melbourne and Canberra he studied medicine at UNSW, in Sydney, and passed with Honours. He spent one year of his undergrad time completing an B(Med)Sc researching clinical decision making. True learning in medicine began as in Intern, Resident and unaccredited Registrar at the St Vincent's Hospital Darlinghurst.

For formal surgical training he was fortunate to be based at the Liverpool Hospital, an extraordinarily busy hospital in the 1990s for general and trauma surgery providing ideal surgical exposure and preparation for practice. He became a Fellow of the Australasian College of Surgeons in 1999.

In mid '99, Andrew moved to Orange, in rural NSW, to established a practice. In Orange he rapidly became very busy in public and private practice; quickly sub-specialising in Colorectal Surgery. In 2002 he commenced performing laparoscopic Colorectal surgery. After performing 2500 major colorectal procedures, 700 of these laparoscopic (including the initial NOSE procedures) Gilmore, and his family, made the difficult decision to leave rural practice and return to Sydney. He continued providing a service to Orange, and his rural patients, each month until late 2024; 25 years of service.

In 2013 Andrew spent a Fellowship year at the Concord Hospital, Sydney, calibrating his colorectal skills for tertiary colorectal practice. He made wonderful friends of the surgeons there and continues that collaboration to this day. In 2014 he had a busy year! He completed a Masters in Surgery at the Sydney University, he was a VMO surgeon at the Royal North Shore Hospital, started private practice at the Macquarrie University Hospital, operated at the Orange Health Service three days a month and completed the requirements for membership of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand.

Late in 2014 he was asked to return to Liverpool Hospital. Always dedicated to surgical teaching Gilmore was attracted by the greater opportunities to teach, that Liverpool offered, and became a VMO surgeon there. During his time at Liverpool he became Head of the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery, then the Head of General Surgery and finally Clinical Stream director for Gastroenterology, upper and lower GIT surgery, Urological, Endocrine and General surgery for the Sydney South West Local Health District. (Andrew has stepped back from the positions in recent years). In 2015 Gilmore established the Complex Pelvic Surgery Unit at the Liverpool hospital which he continues to chair until this day. In 2016 he was instrumental in successfully applying for the Liverpool Colorectal Unit to become an accredited training post for the Australia and New Zealand Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery. Since that time we have had training Fellows of the highest calibre at the Liverpool Hospital.
