Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is debilitating chronic autoimmune disease that affects the GUT; most commonly the small intestine, the colon and/or the anus. Crohn's disease causes inflammation of the colon (colitis) and small bowel (enteritis), strictures (tight narrowing) of the bowel and fistulas (abnormal communicating tracts between between the pieces of the gut, the skin and other surfaces). Specialised gastroenterologists have made great strides in treating Crohn's in the last twenty years. However quality expert surgery remains an important pillar of Crohn's management. Beware a gastroenterologist who will not offer/recommend surgical opinions for Crohn's; they offer a, sometimes dangerous, disservice with that behaviour. With modern surgery Crohn's often does not need to be excised. Prof Gilmore has the largest experience of isoperistaltic side-to side stricturoplasty in Australia and New Zealand (also known as the Michelassi procedure) which can save your bowel and avoid resection.
