NOSE for Diverticular Disease & its Complications

In 2025 Prof Gilmore published the worlds largest series of NOSE surgery for the complications of Diverticular disease. The indications for surgery included acute and chronic diverticulitis (including large masses known as phlegmons), stricturing (narrowing) of the colon, fistlulas (abnormal tracts from the colon to the urinary bladder, the vagina and skin), abscesses and even life threatening bleeding from the colon.

While performing over 200 of these cases he has kept very tight data on his out comes. He has a leak rate from the join of only 1.5% which is extraordinarily low for this difficult type of surgery. Only 1 patient has required a temporary bag at the primary operation. The most common length of stay is only 4 days.

Prof Gilmore has perfected the NOSE technique in collaboration with Prof John Cartmill who often assists with these operations.

Unfortunately many of the patients who have undergone NOSE for diverticulitis have had chronic pain for many years. They have been stunned by how much their quality of life has improved from a laparoscopic cure with NOSE; often regretting not having something done about it years earlier!
